Abstract
  • The author began by reviewing literature on styles of leadership. He also interviewed many pastors and parishioners of African-American Baptist congregations, including some who were neither Black nor Baptist. The author produced a workbook which is particularly designed for pastors and parishioners of African-American Baptist congregations. The workbook was refined after being submitted to certain pastors and professors for a critical evaluation and after discussion by certain Black parishioners in a workshop setting. The author devised four chapters: Leadership: its concept; Origin of leadership styles; Diversity of leadership styles; and Implementing leadership styles. Reading this dissertation/project, pastors can have a better understanding of their role as a leader and parishioners can have a better understanding of their pastor as a leader and themselves as followers. Hence, less mistakes might be made when selecting pastors to fulfill 'vacant pulpits.'.
