Abstract
  • This project examines the impact and opportunities of the objective (transcendent) and subjective (experiential) elements in preaching. The concept of a 'personal theological identity' as a key to power in preaching is proposed, tested, and illustrated through the writings of the synoptic gospels and the sermons of John Calvin, Karl Barth, Frederick Buechner, and the author of this study. In each case study, the author seeks out the presence of dominant themes, how they emerge from individual life experience, and serve to both clarify and restrict the on-going work of theology in the preacher.
