  • This project report examines the history of church closures in Cobourg Presbytery from earliest times to the present. It reviews why and how amalgamation took place, and surfaces the need for an appraisal in response to new insights and perspectives. In rural realignment, 'small is beautiful' and attitudinal and spiritual dimensions play an important part. The report relates the work of the candidate with his Ministry Base Group and with people who experienced amalgamation: those whose churches were closed, those who were in the host churches, the ministers of closed churches, and the people who prevented their churches from closing. Amalgamation was, for the most part, a negtive experience with a legacy of unresolved problems. The resolution of these problems offers the basis for a challenge in ministry in the 1980's.
