- Abstract
- This project develops a theory and model of funeral process predicated on a recognition that: 1) grief is experienced and expressed by bereaved family systems as well as by individuals, 2) initiatory ritual processes promote empathy and grief work in bereaved family systems, and 3) the presence of the deceased may be evoked as a thou-in-memory. As clergy act to make real this presence in prefuneral family remembering and confirm it in the eulogy, it may act as a conjoining and mediating agency conferring power, meaning and grace for personal and family systematic grief work.
