Abstract
  • This paper analyzes the reasons for the decline of church membership in mainline churches since the early 1960s; considers the relevance of the Wesleyan movement for evangelization today; and proposes a model for wholistic evangelization that seeks to build bridges between a concern for personal salvation and a desire for social justice. A project of congregational assessment was used to enable an urban congregation with declining membership to be engaged in evangelization. The project resulted in the development of more hopeful attitudes, dialogue on evangelism, and the creation of a variety of programs to invite persons to the church.
