Abstract
  • This paper describes a six-month Participatory Action Research (PAR) project that utilized focus groups in a ninety-five year old small congregation to explore the possibility of reinstituting the diaconate in order to address the need for ministries of service and compassion. Although the congregation decided not to reinstitute the office of deacon at this time, significant learning and growth in perspective occurred concerning the nature of change in small congregations. Results from this study suggest that the elimination of the office of deacon, allowed by the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), G-6.0403 b., changes the culture of smaller congregations.
