Abstract
  • The project determines how the Fourth Street-Friendship Seventh Day Adventist Church can reach the unchurched of Ward 5 in Washington, D.C. During its 30 years of existence the church has received into fellowship only five individuals from the unchurched population. This project indicates that the church can be more effective in its outreach to the unchurched by developing multi-facit and contextualized ministries. The instrument used to collect data for the study are questionnaires, observation and interviews. The study reveals the following dynamics to be contributors to the church's inability to effectiveley minister to the unchurched: inadequate laity participation, ambiguity of mission and vision, outdated evangelistic methodology, under funded outreach ministry, insufficuent contextualized ministry and extremely low church involvement in the community. The project also reveals that a combination and flexibility of methods can produce improved results.
