  • Ten lay care training programs, prepared and indigenous, were evaluated and two selected and adapted for two local churches' ministry to alcoholics and their families. Howard W Stone's The Caring Church and Duane A Ewer's A Ministry of Caring were adapted for the two churches. Since current materials were deficient about giving care to alcoholics and their families, one session about alcoholism and other materials were added to the training. Alcoholism was defined as a multifaceted disease with physiological, psychological, sociological and spiritual components. Lay care givers were encouraged to refer alcoholics and their families to trained counselors and treatment centers.
