Abstract
  • This thesis proposes to overcome this congregation's over-emphasis on the rational which hinders its mission of hospitality by bringing the emotional power of the sacraments into the sermon. In-depth interviews were conducted prior to the project to ascertain the congregation's attitudes and understandings about the sacraments. Responses to four sermons in which sacraments played an integral part were examined. A small group of parishioners gave feedback after each sermon. These interviews and surveys revealed that the sacraments have high emotional content for believers, that they stimulate memory, senses and emotion. Bringing the sacraments into the sermon through image, scripture and physical proximity increased the emotional response to the sermon and heightened the experience of the sacraments.
