Abstract
  • Because in the Korean church emphasis has been on church growth and active prayer, contemplation has been neglected. To address this need, 12 adults in Daebang Methodist Church were trained in the understanding and practice of Christian contemplation. The project was grounded in a study of the biblical, theological, historical, and psychological approaches to spiritual theology and Christian contemplation, in comparison with the practice of contemplation in other religions in Korea. Changes in the understanding and practice of contemplation through the 26-session training course, which were measured by a written pre/post questionnaire, took place in the areas of faith development, value of life, and experience of sanctification. The possibility of fostering greater capacity for contemplation in the Korean church has thus been confirmed by the training done in this project.
