Abstract
  • Upon observing Christians participating in traditional religion in Sierra Leone and Papua New Guinea, I was challenged to study the Bible to learn what it had to say about both the existence of spirit beings and what power they may have. The study uses the Old Testament to research terms as they related to spirit beings, their power, the practices associated with them, and the locating of key texts dealing with this topic. All of this material was used as the basis to define a biblical view of the spirit world. Recommendations are made to help those from a modern worldview and an animist worldview gain a better understanding of who and what the spirits are and also to give them a tool to help them deal with those who continue to follow the practices and beliefs of their traditional religion.
