Abstract
  • The thesis details a project to determine the grounds of the continued commitment of members to a church in trouble despite their disappointment and frustration. The project involved in-depth interviews with church members who had experienced significant crises in their church. The responses fell into the catagories of: the church as community; memory; hope; aspects of the respondents' personalities; and pastoral leadership. By far the most significant unifying force for these groups was the fellowship of the congregation. On this basis, the author suggests several ways in which this information can be used in local churches and governing bodies.
