- This study of the relationship of the middle age woman to her mother incorporates the basic theory of separation-individuation along with various concepts from the Old Testament, New Testament and other authored works related to the commandment, 'Honor your father and your mother'. Included is the study of thirty-one women from a suburban Roman Catholic church, the subsequent presentation of findings on a matrix, and four case studies of women who showed a predominance in one of the phases of individuation, i.e., symbiosis, practicing, individuation, or distancing. The results support the hypothesis that the relationship of middle age women to their mothers bears similarities to their separation-individuation process in their early years of life.
