Abstract
  • This study researched the leadership styles (clergy and laity) of four urban Presbyterian churches and analyzed the relatedness of leadership style to effective ministry. Two instruments were used in a retreat setting. The instruments determined styles of leadership, defined ministry, discussed who performs the ministry, and to whom. The results provided opportunity for evaluation and setting of goals. The most effective and dynamic churches were those that shared responsibility and power between clergy and laity. All other factors, as important as they seemed at the beginning of the study, proved insignificant when the power issue was addressed.
