Abstract
  • This thesis field tested the Big Idea approach to doctrinal expository preaching. Six sermons were preached from Paul's Epistle to the Colossians for the thesis author's Community Presbyterian Church, Edison, New Jersey. Church members served on two evaluative teams. Research focused on Colossians scholarship; Christology from dogmatic and Pauline theology; expository and doctrinal preaching issues; and listener response. Questionnaires tested knowledge of Pauline teachings; in-depth reviews of the 2006 sermons; and 2008 follow-up on personal application of Pauline teachings and evaluation of subsequent sermons. Improvements in listener retention, personal application and motivation for Bible study were achieved.
