Abstract
  • The church is called to steward God's gifts, with the pastor as chief steward, but churches experience minimal member giving and conflicts over finances. This project sought present attitudes on this problem through 213 pastor and 313 layperson questionnaires sent to churches within the Cape Cod Council, and random samples of the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ and Hyannis Federated Church. Seminars were held for the respondents. Results from 261 respondents revealed the following: pastors know their roles but are 'reluctant stewards;' laypersons expect pastors to be involved but not to know members' giving; and, seminaries should offer stewardship courses.
