Abstract
  • This work examines the biography of Harry Emerson Fosdick, his theology, his philosophy of preaching, his homiletic use of the Bible, and the parallels between his preaching and that of the African American preaching tradition. It also includes a project composed of four sermons by the writer, preached at Bethany Presbyterian Church, Portland, Oregon in Sept-Oct 1999, and evaluations of the sermons by members of a study group from the congregation. The goal of this study is the identification, examination, and promulgation of a pastoral-prophetic hermeneutic for preaching as practiced by Fosdick.
