Abstract
  • This paper addresses the crisis in commitment which exists in the church in the 1990s. The problem is outlined from a sociological, theological and local parish perspective. Self-denial ethics and ethics based on expressive individualism are examined sociologically. Karl Barth's doctrine of justification is compared with Philip Brickman's definition of commitment. Christian freedom is discussed as the necessary ingredient for lifelong commitments. Practical application of the thesis is included in a sample weekend retreat, with lectures and worship centered on the topic of commitment.
