Abstract
  • This project proposes that divorce as an issue of pastoral care can and should be addressed homiletically. While the emotional pain and trauma of divorce make many pastors reluctant to preach about it, Jesus makes clear God's intent for marriage as a lifelong covenant of fidelity. Lutherans properly approach divorce from the perspective of an 'evangelical ethic,' demanding a proper balance of Law and Gospel. Any sermon on divorce should be specific, biblically honest, and accessible. The preacher should carefully balance Law and Gospel, identify with listeners' struggles, deal with human and family relationships honestly, and avoid moralistic pronouncements, taking into account the denominational position on divorce and the limitations of sermons in addressing divorce.
