Abstract
  • This project examines the role and function of permanent deacons in the Catholic church in the United States in light of the role and function of deacons in the early church and recent Catholic social teaching. It proposes that the central role of the deacon in the church today should be that of an ordained pastoral minister of the church's social mission. The project is an example of one way of implementing this kind of ministry in the church. It is a manual for conducting a parish listening process in order to assist parishes in identifying and developing their social mission.
