Abstrakt

The author asks: Can the model of the Quaker clearness committee be adapted to help single clergywomen of the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church address their unique concerns for self-care, leadership, and itinerancy? She offers a historical sketch of single women in ministry and discusses pneumatology, United Methodist doctrine, and Quaker theology. A congregational control group explored differences between single and married clergy leadership styles, and a single clergywomen's control group learned, practiced, and evaluated the adapted process. The author concludes that the clearness committee can be adapted as a valuable spiritual practice, especially for single clergywomen.
