Abstract
  • This is a research paper on the use of persuasion in preaching. It examines the use of persuasive techniques in the preaching of the prophets, Jesus, and Paul. It examines the differences between positive persuasion, manipulation, and propaganda. It reviews the process of intentional persuasion in preaching. Two original sermons are presented, not as models, but as attempts to use the intentional processes recommended by the literature. The sermons were evaluated by the author's congregation and reviewed by a listening group of nine members. The resulting conclusion is that persuasion is a tool for effective preaching in the 1990s.
