  • This project offers a historical analysis of Methodism in Estonia, from the missionaries in czarist Russia, through the independent Republic of Estonia, through the Soviet occupation and persecution, to a new freedom in the 1990s. Lack of foreign missionaries during much of this time left Estonian Methodism with a strong, indigenous leadership, but it has also inherited an indefinite ecclesiology and an incomplete understanding of the sacraments, which have issued in confusion of identity. Without a clear and definable Methodist identity, the mission of Estonian Methodists will remain incomplete and incoherent.
