Abstract
  • Students in this study participated in required community service projects. The concern for service carries out the practices of the Society of Friends (Quakers). The question studied was the effects of requiring community service. Pre and post test measures were taken using instruments to measure self-esteem, social and personal responsibility. Interview and group discussion were used to gather data. The students in this study showed a significant increase in social and personal responsibility. Self-esteem did not change significantly. There are several characteristics of program design that could be incorporated in service programs to allow for growth in high school students.
