- Health is defined as the balance, adaptation, or homeostasis of body, mind and spirit. Disease frequently occurs when a patient's lifestyle is not in harmony with his/her attitudes, values and beliefs. This study explores ways in which physicians and clergy can work together to foster wholistic health for patients. The University of Michigan, Department of Family Practice has employed a full-time pastoral counselor/ethicist to further the cooperation between clergy and physicians. Through a training program focused on counseling skills, clergy and physicians have developed comfortable working relationships. The results of this activity include: 1) increased interaction between clergy and physicians; 2) increased understanding of each other's roles and complementary skills; 3) an increase of referrals between clergy and physicians; 4) fewer referrals to outside agencies and increased patient satisfaction with resources of counseling.
