- Abstract
- This project proposes to assist African American congregations in renewing a stewardship covenant with God: 'We will not forget the house of our God' (Nehemiah 10:39). Five congregations (United Methodist, United Church of Christ, Baptist, nondenominational, and Disciples of Christ) from Chicago and Lansing, Michigan, studied current trends in stewardship, salaries and benefits for clergy and lay staff, and outreach ministries. The project developed new stewardship programs to encourage these congregations to re-establish themselves as servants to their communities. Qualitative analysis shows how congregations can be more fiscally and socially responsible.
