Abstract
  • Questionnaires and interviews were used to determine how Maine United Methodist ministers (active and retired) prepare(d) for retirment. Feelings, activities, and reasons for retirement were considered and included: anticipation of freedom from the schedule of meetings and other time-intensive demands; expectations to continue their calling as ministers in some way; and satisfaction in retirement related to collegiality if practiced in active ministry. The author suggests that all levels of church governing bodies reconsider their policies and programs for the retirement of ministers. Several questions for further study were raised.
