Abstract
  • A Presbyterian congregation facing confusion over the function of deacons can gain clarity with the help of a task force organized to study biblical, historical, and contemporary resources. As a result of that study, the task force created a specific ministry description for deacons and then shared its findings and the new ministry description with the congregation through a carefully designed plan of education. The author shows that these attempts to clarify the function of the deacons resulted in more effective involvement by deacons in ministries of compassion and witness, and ultimately in spiritual renewal for this particular Presbyterian Church.
