- This study was a search of qualities present in pastors who achieve success in following a long pastorate. The author chose four case studies of pastors and churches in the Presbyterian Church USA who are the 'Joshua' following the 'Moses' of their churches. The long pastorates range from twenty-one to forty- five years. The churches are thriving in increases of worship attendance, membership, budget and staff. Through interviewing the succeeding pastors and members of their search committee, the author found a difference in leadership style in that the former pastors were more autocratic while the successor pastors are more collaborative.
