Abstract
  • The method of this study is three-fold: 1) an analysis of loneliness and isolation as represented by recent authors and by images in the Old and New Testaments; 2) an investigation of pastoral loneliness among Iowa Lutheran clergy; and 3) development of a clergy workshop program which offers guidelines for understanding the dynamics of pastoral loneliness and methods for overcoming it. The study reveals that pastors perceive themselves to be among the loneliest people in American society and that they are eager for opportunities to address this problem in an atmosphere of caring and collegiality.
