- This project enlists 16 terminally ill patients in an experiment to determine whether liturgy, including worship and communion, could significantly reduce death-related fear and anxiety. The project employed the Death Anxiety Scale (Nehrke modification) in a pretest and posttest format to measure changes in the level of fear and anxiety in these patients. Evaluation found that 75 percent of the patients experienced relief of fear and anxiety, while fear and anxiety increased in 19 percent. Communion can be used by chaplains to diminish fear and to reestablish connections with God and the faith community among terminally ill patients in a hospice or hospital setting.
