Abstract
  • This project, conducted during a three-month period, was an attempt to offset trends toward inactive church membership by developing a theologically and sociologically relevant training process for new members. Eight weekly sessions were conducted involving twelve recent candidates for membership. Individual pre-training and post-training interviews with questionnaires were conducted to provide information as to any changes in interest, attitude and/or understanding of the meaning of church membership. Training sessions included a grounding in the six major dimensions of the Christian faith and the meaning of living the gospel. Through this project it was not possible to determine whether the training process would or would not prevent these new members from becoming inactive. The new members definitely increased their understanding of the faith. Interest and enthusiasm was engendered for more study of scripture and the mission of the church. The project also pointed up new directions for our ministry, i.e., the need for a well-planned, total faith-sharing program complete with training workshops, faith-sharing Sundays, and followup.
