Abstract
  • This project proposes that congregations are stories, and can be studied using the tools of narrative, plot, character, and worldview. The project applies these tools in studying one Methodist congregation near Sacramento, California, and six Presbyterian congregations in the Seattle area between 1992 and 1996. Moving beyond the work of James Franklin Hopewell, the project concludes that congregations can be intentional in choosing new plot and new character, and offers a workshop outline for narrative analysis of congregations.
