Abstract
  • Two millennia after the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and the beginnings of his church, the participation of women who proclaim his trust in public worship is still under debate. Exegetical, sociological and resultant theological debates have raged and continue to rage within both scholarly circles as well as in the local church. Sadly, those who hold a high view of Scripture find this issue more divisive, bitter, and emotional than any other. Denominational and church splits have occurred as a result of the ongoing debate over women ministering in local churches. Apologetics from any number of viewpoints abound. Yet, there is a dearth of information that provides guidance to women considering a vocational call to the 'ministry of the Word'. Among the overwhelming number of things that have been written regarding women in the pulpit, little has been written about the women themselves. This is especially true of women who have been educated in evangelical institutions and continue to their commitment to an evangelical view of Scripture. This thesis explores the characteristics that contribute to the effectiveness of evangelical women pursuing God's call to serve as preacher and pastor to the local church. It identifies the barriers with which women must be prepared to deal in the pursuit of that calling and suggests skills that should be honed as well as the character traits, aptitudes and giftedness necessary for a woman to be effective. This thesis suggests areas where a woman, pursuing the call to preach the Word of God, may evaluate her own strengths and weaknesses in light of those who have preceded her, in order to most effectively use her time in preparation.
