  • The role of language as both a psychological and a theological phenomenon: from the perspective of the pastoral counselor as both psychologist and theologian. This study explores the understanding of humanity as a linguistic being. The role of language is explored on the biological, psychological and theological levels. Through this exploration, humanity is understood to be a linguistic being biologically who relates to others, self and God through the use of language and linguistic form. The psyche is composed of two fundamental states: conscious and unconscious. Integration of these states occurs and exists through language or, more precisely, through the dynamic tension between symbol and linguistic form in which the linguistic form brings the linked material into consciousness. In using creation myths of the Old Testament as metaphor, the role of language as a theological phenomenon is explored. Language is fundamental in creation and in one's relaitonship to and with God. The pastoral counselor, in a unique situation as both psychologist and theologian, is able to bring the individual into reconciliation with self, others and God through the use and the power of the Word.
