Abstract
  • Eldership within Stone/Campbell churches has accommodated itself to modernity by its fascination with management theory. The author studied the role and qualifications of the office of bishop/presbyter explicated in First Timothy, and in the early vision of the founders of the Stone/Campbell movement. Based on that research, he argues that the role of the elder is to live a life worthy of being imitated and to be capable of articulating the faith embodied by that life. The author developed a program that was enacted in the parish, which focused on teaching worship and being mentors.
