- Abstract
- This thesis examines the influence of socio-economic factors upon declining church membership in the Sydney North Presbytery of the Uniting Church in Australia (1960-1980). Along with the literature search, a questionnaire was distributed to all congregations within the presbytery and six case studies were conducted. The author also investigates the relevance of the Church Growth and Small Church Movements for the Australian Church. The major external influences focus upon the process of secularization and the cyclical movement of the growth and decline of churches within Sydney associated with the predominance of the middle class. Suggestions for appropriate action are found within the conclusion.
