Abstract
  • The design and purpose of this thesis involved creating a ritual of transition and program of religious education that recognizes adolescent development and affirms the tenth grade teenagers of The Knollwood Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC in their transition to adulthood, especially recognizing the receipt of a driver's license. research in the areas of adolescent physical maturation, cognitive development, faith formation and rituals of transition (or passage rites) along with a study of the theology of ritual support this work. The project included teaching sessions on ritual and spiritual formation, mission service, a weekend retreat, and ultimately the crafting of a congregational worship service that included a ritual transition (litany for new drivers) and celebration of the many stages of life. Evaluative instruments included survey, interview and questionnaire. This work is unique to Baptist congregations because of its emphasis on religious ritual, liturgy and celebrative rites.
