- The purpose of this dissertation is to examine whether a work of music can function as proclamation. The steps in the study are as follows: 1) to develop a set of criteria based on Karl Barth's understanding of proclamation in 'Church Dogmatics' by which a work of music can be judged to function as proclamation; 2) to apply this criteria to part one of 'Messiah' by George F Handel; and 3) to evaluate the ability of people to hear 'Messiah' as proclamation after attending a class series on the work's theological, biblical, and musicological perspectives.
