Abstract
  • Preaching, as an oral and aural event, is musical in character. Like music, it seeks to engage the listener, to evoke, express, and persuade. By actually creating music as a sermonic event, the Word is proclaimed, not only by the preacher, but by all who participate in its utterance, participation which can include the entire congregation. To study the possibilities of musical preaching and its effect on the congregation, this project was undertaken in a special, alternative worship service designed to reach non-church people. The two preaching projects included here were one musical sermon and one service in which all of the liturgical elements were created musically as a preaching mechanism. Participation and the creation of a sense of community were primary goals. Worshippers were interviewed following each service. We discovered that worshippers found the music to be a powerful part of the worship experience. It stayed with them throughout the week and helped to make the Word accessible to them.
