Abstract
  • This project proposes that the Protestant church in Latin America needs to apply a cultural-religious understanding to its work of evangelism. The history of Latin American Christianity reveals that the gospel has not been fully and meaningfully communicated, and that traditional methods, which have been strictly theologically oriented, have been polemical and relatively unsuccessful. This 'cultural approach' to evangelism involves a study (an understanding) of the reciprocal, historical relationship between Roman Catholicism and Latin American culture ('popular Catholicism'), and a knowledge of the underlying animistic belief system of the people.
