  • The centerpiece of this thesis-project is a proposed ministerial sabbatical policy for the Southwestern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The author drafted this policy on the basis of research in the theology of Sabbath rest, clergy burnout, adult learning styles, and missional ecclesiology. The author hypothesized that clergy and lay leaders in congregations can embrace ways of thinking about ministerial sabbaticals that are theologically grounded, missionally driven and sensitive to the context for ministry. The author tested and sustained this hypothesis by conducting interviews with twenty clergy and twenty lay leaders, all of whom had already reviewed a first draft of the sabbatical policy. Following the interviews the writer revised the sabbatical policy, incorporating critical insights from the interviewees.
