Abstract
  • Urban congregations are struggling to survive in the midst of changing populations and attitudes towards the church. The author analyzes the effectiveness of allowing a congregation to strategically die so that a new congregation can emerge in its place. The method is referred to as a church restart. The author attempts to establish the theological basis for the church's existence and investigate the applicability to the local church of 'losing one's life to find it'. Using interviews with leaders and members, the paper follows the progress of three urban congregations in the restart process and finds positive signs of hope.
