  • Spiritual care is an essential element to whole patient care. Nursing plays a critically important role in the delivery of patient spiritual care. Drawing on both the history and literature of nursing and the descriptive statistical study of clinical nurses and nursing students, the project makes recommendations for clinical and education nursing sectors. The descriptive study was designed to provide insight to demographic, educational, religious, and spiritual practices as related to the following dimensions of spiritual care: awareness, attitude, practice, and resource support. Respondents indicated that spiritual care is important and that the practice of spiritual care tended to be more frequent among the theologically conservative, those who engage in personal spiritual practices and the older, more experienced nurse. Obstacles included lack of time, skills, and personal clarity regarding beliefs.
