Abstract
  • This thesis/project is designed to inform the reader of the need to understand and know one's history in the context of the Black church. It contains a six-week study of the United Methodist Church with reference to African American participation in the structures from the beginning of the Methodist Church until the present time. The entire paper lifts up movements which have tried to answer the question, 'What shall we do with the colored people?' in the Methodist Church at one time or another. This paper accomplishes this goal by lifting up the local preachers convention, independent mission conferences, the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and African American Conference in the Methodist Protestant Church.
