Abstract
  • This project is designed to receive and assess information from clergy who counsel parishioners in their congregations. The intent of this project is to ascertain how well clergy measure up to the American Association of Pastoral Counselors' standards for counseling, and to lift up the positive and negative aspects of clergy counseling as currently practiced. The primary elements of this project include a questionnaire completed by an interfaith sampling of congregational clergy in a major metropolitan area, a biblical/historical glimpse of counseling, hope theology, and a family systems model. The final phases include certain observations drawn from the questionnaire identifying aspects of clergy functioning as counselor.
