Abstrait
  • First Presbyterian Church of Virginia City, Nevada organized three years after the discovery of the Comstock Lode. For the next sixty-three years, the congregation participated in and was influenced by a mining economy. The thesis goes beyond an institutional history and examines how church and society influenced each other. Areas of research include an examination of the social lives of members, the role women played, the function of preaching, and cooperation and competition between various religious bodies. Issues of religious pluralism, secularism, and economic uncertainty are examined. A chapter is devoted to the methodology of writing congregational history.
