Abstract
  • 'Journeyers' tested the effectiveness of a ten week discipleship education program in a liberal, mainline Protestant church with a small group of persons. Their changes were compared with pre- and post-test questionnaires to the changes demonstrated by a random sample group from the congregation. The program included components of mutual selection and commitment, building of community, voluntarily chosen disciplines, a body of content, use of action and reflection, integration of body, mind and spirit; and the use of time. The program was designed to meet the identified barriers to discipleship: affluence and corresponding increased choices; fear of authority; too few entry points into the church; and the lack of spiritual disciplines.
