Abstract

With the twenty-first century approaching, Black churches are challenged to develop more effective community ministries to confront increasingly complex social needs. This study makes a case for strategic planning as a useful approach to this problem. The author develops a spiritually based process of strategic planning by borrowing components from business and non-profit sector models and fusing them with spiritual elements from the Faith tradition. The 'Dream Team model,' designed for the Allen Temple Baptist Church of Oakland, California, successfully uses staff and rank and file volunteers to envision, plan, and evaluate cooperatively the church ministry in the community.
