Abstract
  • In a culture marked by limited corporate identity and pervasive individualism, preaching is often viewed as a personalized event. In contrast, sermons that carefully consider the unique faith perspective of a congregation create a richer encounter with the gospel for a particular time and place. This approach honors the priesthood of all believers through the collaborative crafting of a statement of local theology, and reflects the postmodern ethos of the American church by attending to the specific characteristics and perspectives of a local community of faith. This study examines how one congregation crafts a provisional statement in the formation and evaluation of sermons. The conclusions for preaching include the critical importance of a focus on the distinctive characteristics of the local congregation.
